Securing high-value cargo: custom wooden crating and lashing for industrial pipes

Inside a complex OOG project: how Sealine engineered custom wooden crates, ISPM-15 heat-treated timber, VCI corrosion protection, and industrial lashing to move high-value pipes safely by sea and air.
When transporting heavy, high-value industrial pipes, standard shipping solutions simply do not suffice. The sheer weight, irregular dimensions, and sensitivity of the cargo require specialized industrial crating and rigorous cargo securing protocols. Recently, our team executed a complex logistics project involving the custom packing, loading, and lashing of oversized, high-value pipes, ensuring they were ready for both ocean and air freight.
Here is an inside look at how we engineered a custom packaging and stowage solution to guarantee the safe transit of this Out of Gauge (OOG) cargo.
Engineering custom wooden packaging for heavy cargo
Due to the extreme weight and specific dimensions of the pipes, off-the-shelf pallets were not an option. Uneven weight distribution (center of gravity) in heavy cylindrical cargo can cause standard pallets to warp or collapse during transit. To combat this, our team engineered heavy-duty, custom wooden boxes.
Multi-modal export readiness: sea-worthy and air-worthy design
At the time of packing, the final mode of transport — whether sea freight or air freight — had not been finalized. Therefore, our packaging engineers designed a hybrid solution that met the stringent requirements for both.
Sea-worthy packing
Ocean transit exposes cargo to intense vibrations, pitch and roll, and "container rain" (extreme moisture condensation). We utilized high-grade, moisture-resistant timber and incorporated internal saddles and wooden chocks (dunnage) built directly into the crate. This structural bracing absorbs shock and prevents the pipes from rolling or shifting inside the box.
Air-worthy packing
For air freight, optimizing the strength-to-weight ratio is crucial. We utilized heavy-duty runner beams on the base for maximum load support, combined with high-density, lightweight plywood for the side walls.
ISPM-15 compliance for global export
To ensure zero delays at customs, all timber used in our custom crates was strictly ISPM-15 compliant. The wood was heat-treated to a minimum core temperature of 56°C for 30 minutes and stamped with the official IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) mark, guaranteeing it was pest-free and ready for seamless international customs clearance.
Advanced corrosion protection (VCI)
High-value industrial pipes, especially those made of carbon steel or specialized alloys, are highly susceptible to rust and corrosion caused by airborne salts and moisture during transit. To safeguard the cargo, we integrated VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) packaging. The pipes were wrapped in VCI film, which releases a molecular layer of protection that interrupts the electrochemical reactions that cause rust, ensuring the pipes arrive at the destination factory-clean and ready for immediate deployment.
Safe container loading, stowage, and lashing
Proper packaging is only half the battle; how the cargo is loaded and secured inside the shipping container dictates its ultimate safety. Improper stowage of heavy pipes can lead to catastrophic cargo damage, container breaches, or safety hazards for unloading crews.
Our specialized rigging and loading team executed a meticulous stowage plan:
- Precision loading: Using specialized pipe lifting clamps and heavy-duty forklifts, the custom wooden crates were carefully loaded into the containers, ensuring the center of gravity was perfectly balanced across the container floor.
- Industrial lashing and choking: To prevent any lateral or longitudinal movement during transit, we utilized heavy-duty lashing belts, steel chains, and turnbuckles. The cargo was choked using specialized wooden dunnage and rubber friction pads.
- Compliance with stowage rules: Our lashing angles and tension levels were calculated to meet strict maritime stowage and lashing regulations, ensuring the cargo could withstand the severe dynamic forces of a maritime environment without shifting.
