ISPM 15 — the global packing rule you can't skip

ISPM 15 — the global packing rule you can't skip

What ISPM 15 actually certifies, how we treat our wood, and what inspectors look for at the port.

ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is a globally recognised regulation issued by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). Its purpose: prevent pest and disease transmission through wooden packaging materials used in international commerce.

Why it matters

Wooden pallets, crates, and dunnage can harbor invasive insects and pathogens that threaten agriculture and forestry. ISPM 15 mandates proper treatment of these materials before shipping.

What's covered

Solid wood packaging materials exceeding 6 mm thickness — wooden pallets, crates, boxes, dunnage, and wooden cable drums.

Treatment methods

  • Heat Treatment (HT) — minimum core temperature of 56°C for 30 minutes.
  • Methyl Bromide (MB) fumigation — accepted in fewer countries each year.

The mark

Compliant wood receives the ISPM 15 stamp — often called the 'wheat stamp' — showing the IPPC logo, country code, provider number, and treatment type.

Exemptions

Engineered wood products, cardboard, plastic, and metal packaging are exempt.

Global reach

More than 180 countries have adopted ISPM 15. Non-compliance risks re-export, fees, or destruction of goods — which is why we never cut corners on it.
